A maiko is an apprentice, learning the geiko's trade. Maiko and geiko are the terms used in Kyoto. Maiko are apprentice geiko, most of them between the ages of 15 and 20. The origins of maiko and geiko date back about 400 years, when women who worked at chaya rest houses served refreshments to people visiting Gion Shrine, which is now called Yasaka Shrine.

My name is Steven. This is a channel dedicated to old Japanese traditional Kominka and Machiya houses. Purchased a 90-year-old Kyo-machiya in Dec 2020 on a 35-year housing loan. Spent 6-month planning and another 1 year for renovation (through a contractor). The Machiya renovation was completed in April 2022 and is now the home for my family of 4. I also run the website KORYOYA with Kominka and Machiya properties that are for sale (mainly around Kansai region).

Hi Folks, 20 years ago, When I was a kid, my dad told me about the reduction of manpower of traditional trades due to the industrialization and modernization of Japanese society, traditional products started to become outdated and forgotten. Today, I'm proud to be a Miyadaiku (carpenter) to build and repair traditional temples and shrines, when my dream has come true and my passion has been achieved. We want to spread this to the younger generation and glorify them as much as possible.
